Mailman lists (Activix.org, NoFlag.org.uk, Mutualaid.org etc.)

If the mailing list you use has the following logo at the bottom of it's web page...

File:Mailman.jpg

... then the software running the list is Mailman.

Simple Method for adding a single member to an open mailing list

If the mailing list is open for anyone to join (without getting permission first) then individual email addresses can be added using the following instructions.

What you will need first

Before you start you will need to know the web address for the general information page of the mailing list. You may need to contact whoever administers or hosts the list to get this information.

Here is an example of what this address may look similar to...

Basic Example - http://lists.example.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/mylistname
The listinfo/mylistname bit is common for all Mailman mailing lists.
listinfo signifying general information about a specific mailing list.
mylistname is the example I will use in this guide for the unique identifier assigned to this specific mailing list.
For your list this will be the same as the extension used at the beginning of the lists email address
(e.g. mylistname@lists.example.org.uk .)
The rest of the web address may be entirely different.
Noflag.org.uk Example - http://lists.noflag.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/mylistname__lists.noflag.org.uk
Mutualaid.org Example - https://lists.mutualaid.org/mailman/listinfo/mylistname
Aktivix.org Example - https://lists.aktivix.org/mailman/listinfo/mylistname

Step by Step Guide

Step 1

Go to the web address (see above)

Step 2

Scroll down to where it says "Subscribing to mylistname"

(mylistname replaced by the identifier given to your mailing list)

Step 3

Fill out the form then click on the "Subscribe" button.

Instructions for a closed list or adding multiple members

Things you will need first

To add multiple members to a mailing list simultaneously, or if only certain people are allowed to add members to a mailing list, then you will need to have access to the administration area of the list.

To access the administration area of the mailing list you will need to know two things...

  • The web address for the general information page of the mailing list.

Step 6

A confirmation message should appear letting you know if each email address has been successfully added or not.

Step 7

This will make sure noone else can access the administration area of the mailing list afterwards.
